Portugal Scored After A Comical Own Goal

Cristiano Ronaldo was the beneficiary of the most comical goal of the day. Portugal took the lead after the Azerbaijan keeper clearance struck his own man Medvedev and went in.

Portugal were having difficulty breaking down Azerbaijan in their opening game of 2022 World Cup qualifying. Many predicted a thrashing and numerous goals for Cristiano Ronaldo, but that was far from the case.

Portugal fans had to wait until the final minutes of the first half to see the only goal against Azerbaijan. Even though Cristiano Ronaldo was closest to it, he was not involved in the goal.

In fact, none of his teammates were involved either as it was an own goal. Medvedev inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Cristiano Ronaldo was waiting to get on the end of a cross, but Mahammadaliyev, the Azerbaijan GK, got there first to punch away. However, he punched the ball onto Medvedev and that sent the ball into the back of the net. Cristiano Ronaldo saw his team take the lead and he had the perfect view of it.
